Jai Mata Di ЁЯЩП
Today marks the sixth day of Chaitra Navratri. This day is dedicated to that invincible and catastrophic energy that manifests when unrighteousness crosses all limits in the universe. Today, we worship that 'Mahishasuramardini' form of Adishakti, known in the scriptures as Maa Katyayani.
This form is not merely that of a warrior goddess; it is a rare convergence of supreme cosmic power, indomitable courage, and pure devotion. Let us, through this special edition of PanditVerse, dive deep into the original story of Maa Katyayani's manifestation, her divine form, the secrets of the Ajna Chakra, and the complete ritualistic worship procedure.
'Katyayani': Origin of the Name and Divine Form Visualization
According to Sanatan scriptures, this sixth form of Maa Durga is intensely brilliant and effulgent like gold (Glowing). Because she manifested as the daughter of Sage Katyayana, she obtained the name 'Katyayani'.
The Invincible Divine Form:
- Four-Armed Form: Maa Katyayani is four-armed. Her appearance is seen as fully prepared for war against evil.
- Vara and Abhaya Mudras: Her upper right hand is in the 'Abhaya Mudra', granting fearlessness to devotees, and the lower right hand is in the 'Vara Mudra', representing the giving of blessings.
- Weapons: In her upper left hand, she holds a shining sword (Chandrahasa Khadga), and her lower left hand is adorned with a sacred 'Lotus flower'.
- Mount: The mount of the Mother is a massive and ferocious 'Lion', symbolizing her indomitable courage and power.
The Puranic Epic: The Sage's Penance and the Slaying of Mahishasura
The main story of Maa Katyayani's manifestation is described in great detail in the Markandeya Purana (Durga Saptashati). This story is the greatest example of Cosmic Convergence of energy.
1. The Wrath of the Trideva and Convergence of Energy
Once, the atrocities of a demon named 'Mahishasura' increased so much that he defeated the gods and took capture of heaven. Mahishasura had a boon that no god or man could kill him. When all the gods approached Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva for help, fierce anger arose within the Trideva upon hearing of the demon's tyrannies.
From that anger, an intensely bright light (Tej) emerged from the bodies of Lord Shiva, Vishnu, and Brahma. The brilliance from the bodies of all other gods (Indra, Agni, Surya, etc.) also emerged and began to meet at that single point. That collective Mass of Cosmic Energy took the form of an exceedingly radiant woman. The gods presented their respective weapons to the Goddess. Lord Shiva gave a Trident, Vishnu gave a Chakra (discus), and Agni Dev gave his power (Shakti).
2. Manifestation in Sage Katyayana's Ashram
This energy required a medium on Earth to manifest physically. At that time, the world-renowned Sage Katyayana of the 'Katya' lineage was performing severe penance for years with the desire to obtain Adishakti as his daughter. The combined brilliance of the gods became manifest as the Goddess in the ashram of Sage Katyayana itself. Sage Katyayana was the first to worship this Goddess (from Ashvin Krishna Chaturdashi to Navami), because of which she came to be known as 'Katyayani' in the universe.
3. The Slaying of Mahishasura (Mahishasuramardini)
On the day of Dashami, Maa Katyayani descended onto the battlefield. Mahishasura was a shapeshifter (Mayavi); he kept changing his form repeatedly in battle. He would sometimes become a buffalo (Mahish), sometimes a lion, sometimes an elephant, and sometimes a human warrior. But Maa Katyayani continued to destroy his every form with her weapons and unwavering concentration. Finally, when that demon was in the form of a buffalo, the Mother pressed him under her feet and beheaded him with her sword. Because of this grand act of valor, she became renowned across the three worlds as 'Mahishasuramardini' (Slayer of Mahishasura).
Srimad Bhagavatam: The Gopis' 'Katyayani Vrat'
The Goddess who is so terrifying on the battlefield is exceedingly compassionate regarding love and devotion. The Srimad Bhagavatam Mahapurana (Tenth Canto) describes that the Gopis of Vrindavan performed a month-long 'Katyayani Vrat' at the banks of the Yamuna, making an idol of Maa Katyayani from sand (dirt) to obtain Lord Krishna as their husband.
The Sacred Invocation (Mantra)
Katyayani Mahamaye Mahayoginyadhishvari |
Nandagopasutam Devi Patim Me Kuru Te Namah ||
(Translation: O Goddess Katyayani, the great illusion and supreme ruler of all Yoginis, please bless me with the son of Nanda (Lord Krishna) as my husband. I offer my salutations to you.)
Spiritual Secret: Mahishasura is truly the 'ego' within us. The Gopis knew that until the ego within (Maya/Illusion) dies, Supreme Love (God/Krishna) cannot be attained. Maa Katyayani destroyed their ego and granted them the boon of Lord Krishna's proximity.
Yoga Science: Divine Awakening of the 'Ajna Chakra' (Third Eye)
The sixth day of Navratri is the most powerful time for yogis and seekers to awaken the 'Ajna Chakra' (Third Eye).
Location: This chakra is located between our two eyebrows, in the glabella (Bhrikuti). It is the center of intuition, willpower, and clear vision.
- Destruction of Illusion (Bhram): Just as Mahishasura was deceiving by changing forms, the world traps us in the net of Maya (illusion). When the Ajna Chakra is awakened, the human 'vision' becomes clear, and one instantly recognizes right from wrong.
- Unwavering Concentration: Students or youths who meditate upon Maa Katyayani at the glabella today achieve infinite 'focus' and attain their goals in any situation.
Sixth Navratri Puja Vidhi and Mahabhog Procedure
1. Powerful Auspicious Color (The Color of Power)
Wearing Red, Maroon, or Deep Orange clothes in the worship of Maa Katyayani is best. Red is the symbol of power, valor, victory, and internal courage. Wearing red on this day eliminates all fear within a person.
2. Sacred Offerings (Flowers)
Red flowers are exceedingly dear to the Mother. Offer a garland of Red Rose or Red Hibiscus in the worship.
3. Vedic Mahabhog (Honey)
On the sixth day, Honey (Madhu) is offered to Maa Katyayani.
Ayurvedic Logic: To concentrate focus on the Ajna Chakra (brain center), neurons require pure energy (Glucose), which is abundant in natural honey. Consuming it as Prasad after offering it increases mental concentration and generates a divine aura on the face.
Proven Dhyana Mantra and Navdurga Stuti
On this day, sit on a red mat, concentrate your vision between both eyebrows (Ajna Chakra), and clearly chant this powerful mantra:
Dhyana Mantra of Maa Katyayani:
Chandrahasojjvalakara Shardulavaravahana.
Katyayani Shubham Dadyad Devi Danavaghatini.
(Simple Meaning: May Maa Katyayani, who holds the shining sword named 'Chandrahasa' in her hands, who is seated on a magnificent lion, and who is the slayer of demons (ego), bless me.)
Navdurga Stotra (Prayer Mantra):
Ya Devi Sarvabhuteshu Maa Katyayani Rupena Samsthita.
Namastasyai Namastasyai Namastasyai Namo Namah.
